Mayaro, the Sea and the Bible

1 ChroniclesThere are many references to the Sea in the Bible. Mayaro, a small fishing village along the South Eastern coast of the Caribbean island of Trinidad offers miles of Sea front.

We find the Sea to be the perfect place to read the Bible and meditate.

We are curious to know if around the world the same happens, that is, if the Sea is also a great place to meditate and read the Bible, and if so, why do you think that is?

Predestination or Free Will

Other - MiscI'm currently working on a research project for the doctrine of election contrasted with eternal security. This is basicaly a debate between Calvinism and Arminianism. If anyone has any thoughts here I'd love to hear them. Does man have the will to choose a Holy God or has God foreordained those (the elect) who will choose him and those (the reprobate) that will not (and be eternally damned)? This is expressed in the Calvinistic acrostic, TULIP. Comments?

Dictionary

Site SuggestionsMany words we use in discussing our religion are such a common part of our vocabulary that we seldom stop to ask ourselves, "what does this word really mean?". We falsely assume non-believers understand these words. Often times. it turns out we ourselves are confused, or really don't know the word's meaning. Some such words that come to mind are:
"lost", "sinner", "faith", "saved", etc..

I suggest having a WORD dictionary section were people can provide a short definition, and a word discussion section where people can expound on why a particular definition is good or not.

The logicical place of birds in evolution/creation

Topic De JourSuppose that the bible was written without help from God.

If you were writing this bible as a ordinary man, why in the world would you say birds came before snakes, or before other things that seem less complex in the order of creation? It wouldn't make any sense. In fact, it would go against all logic of the day. Yet, now science says that birds did evolve before snakes. How could a Godless man, without the science of today guess this? And even if he did guess this why would he print it knowing it would go against common thought of his day?

The creation story in Genesis matches up very well with what we now think we know of creation from science.

Evolution

Topic De JourIn nature is seems like all of the evolution that we observe goes from a higher order to a lower order. However, the principle of evolving from lower to higher does work - given enough time. The only problem is time. It takes almost no time at all to see something go from a complex state to a less complex state, but it takes a very long time for things to evolve from simple to complex.

It really makes you wonder how something complex comes into being. If things are constantly falling apart, how does anything ever put itself more together (and stay) and become something new AND more complex than previously existed?

Creation - How the Earth was made

Topic De JourA long time ago I was talking with my Dad about Creation. I asked how the World could be created in 7 days.

He asked me if I lived 2000 years ago and all of the sudden I had a vision of how a TV worked in the same way we do today, how would I describe a TV to my friends. They wouldn't have any understanding of anything about a TV.

If I tried to describe the technical details of television it would all be lost on them. Probably the best I could do would be to describe it as a box in which you could watch moving pictures. But what is a moving picture?

My father made me think. His point was that this would be the same sort of situation you would be in if God gave you the knowledge of how the Earth was created. Even knowing everything we think we know today, if we were thrust back in time and tried to explain how the Earth was created it would be very difficult to do well.

Perhaps the easiest thing to do would be to describe creation in periods. We could call each period a day just to make it simple but in reality each period would be quite different in length.

What is happening at CommonBible.com?

General NewsCommonbible.com is a new website and as such will be undergoing many improvements as time goes on.

The initial bible database has now been built. We have the bible in four different translations - ASV, DBY, KJV, and YLT.

Right now users will see all verses in KJV, but soon users will be able to select their prefered translation. After a user has selected their prefered translation all verses shown will be in that version. This is something we are working on now.

A new statistics module has been added while will show daily activity.

A new module has been added while will allow users to post scriptures by using a shortcut command. Users can use the formant [ showverse:Gen:1:7] for example.
Any time this format is used in a article, comment, or personal note it is displayed in readers prefered translation.

On the to-do list is the completion of the personal notes feature. Once fully enabled users will be able to post personal notes (which can only be seen by them) to scriptures and chapters. The idea here is to use this like the margins of your bible.
